AUGUST 2008

INTERNATIONAL NEWS AND BUSINESS LESSONS
- Talks between Robert Mugabe`s ZANU PF and Morgan Tsvangirai`s MDC break down
- Thousands flee Hurricane Gustav and other tropical storms in the Caribbean, the USA and India. New Orleans is evacuated in a flashback to Hurricane Katrina
- In a confusing conflict, Russia and Georgia take pot shots at each other before calling a truce.

SPORT
- The Springboks put on a dismal showing to finish bottom of the log in the Tri Nations. Eccentric and outspoken coach, Pieter de Villiers, will / must start getting results out of his talented squad
- Meanwhile, after a test series victory over England, our cricket teams go off the boil and lose one test and four consecutive one dayers (losing the opportunity to go top of the ICC one day rankings). Loudmouthed trash talking ex SAFA Kevin Pietersen is appointed England captain and enjoys a perfect start to what will hopefully be a disappointing and unsuccessful stint as England captain!!!
- The Beijing Olympics are a marvelous spectacle, with Michael Phelps (record 8 gold`s in one games and most gold`s of all time) and Usain Bolt (100 / 200 sprint double) the stars of the show. South Africa enjoys its worst ever Olympics, with post mortems revealing administrative bungles and bad coaching
- Manchester City is purchased by the Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment, the vehicle through which Dubai Oil Sheikhs invest their oil wealth. With estimated net wealth of ₤460bn, the group makes Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich look like a kid with a piggy bank. Cities smash the British transfer record on Robinho within hours of taking over and pledge to spend 100s of millions of Pounds on the world`s top players. Truly, the playthings of the rich are becoming ever more sophisticated!

AT HOME
- Terrible storms lash the Western Cape, which experiences snow, flooding and extreme cold. Beachfronts across Cape Town are a spectacle as foam covered roads make curb mounting the norm. Eskom copes fine in the bad weather!
- The Rand holds up despite high inflation
- Most customers had a very slow August and are hopeful that the summer pick up will start as per normal in September
