NEWS FROM AFAR
• In Pakistan, gunmen attack the bus carrying Sri Lanka’s cricket team. Several Pakistani
policemen guarding the bus are killed, and five Sri Lankan cricketers and their assistant
coach are injured, including household names like Jayawardene and Sangakara. Sri Lanka was
touring Pakistan after India pulled out over security concerns. Australia and the West
Indies also recently cancelled tours over security concerns, and New Zealand cancelled a
tour in 2002 after a bomb exploded outside the team’s hotel.
The attack will likely put an end to international cricket in Pakistan in the short term,
and will almost certainly end Pakistan’s hopes of co-hosting the 2011 World Cup with
India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
• Parrots helped a former US fireman, who in a 1995 car accident was left paralyzed with
the speech ability of a one year old, to walk and talk again, defying the predictions of
his doctors. Brian Wilson was so desperate to communicate with his parrots (who loved even
the goo-goos and gaa-gaas which were all he could voice after the accident), that
eventually, speech returned to him. He now runs a shelter for unwanted birds. Col Timbers
service always leaves you speechless!
• Insurance giant AIG has reported a loss of $61.7bn in the final 3 months of 2008, the
largest quarterly loss in corporate history. The firm will receive $30bn in addition to
the $150bn already received as part of a US government bailout. Other US bailouts received
so far include Bank of America ($45bn), Citigroup ($50bn), JP Morgan Chase ($25bn) and a
long list of others. The US government is taking large stakes in all of these companies,
and will surely make a massive profit when they are privatized once markets have turned.

NEWS FROM THE COL FACE
• We had a quiet February, particularly up country, as the weak economy takes its toll on
consumers. Most businesses are striving to survive this storm.
• We are seeing the benefits of the Swartland merger as we move to ISO9001 status and become
a World Class Manufacturer. We had ZERO out of stocks for the last 2 weeks of Feb and
first few days of March.
• Customers should use our availability and more frequent deliveries and merchandising to
reduce their stockholding and space requirements for our products (unless of course they
have excess working capital and too much space!). Our reps will discuss this with you on
their regular visits.
• Our annual staff outing was team building and lunch at Die Strandloper. Well done to the
winning teams, the sheep and the cats!!! Only one team completed the children’s jig saw
puzzle! Makes you think? * see below for answer *

MONTHLY MOTIVATIONAL THOUGHT
Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are good is like expecting the bull not to charge because you are a vegetarian!
