APRIL 2009
30 April 2009

THE BIG PICTURE
• Tata introduce the Worlds` Cheapest car named the NANO boasting a 25kw motor. On the
opposite side of the carriage, Chrysler, once one of the World’s leading auto brands,
files for bankruptcy and looks like being taken over by Fiat, famous for their small
compact cheap cars. What lessons are there in this saga? By the way, a Tata Nano will cost less
than an Apple Mac note book or a Tag Heuer watch!
• The World Trade Organization predicts 2009 will see the steepest decline in global trade since
World War II.
• In the UK, accounting firm KPMG says 85% of its workforce will accept pay cuts and reduced
working hours rather than retrenchment.
• In the developed world unemployment rates are creeping up to double digits, as the world economy
continues to slow down albeit at a reduced rate of decline.
• Fortunately for us nature loving South Africans, none of the worlds ten most endangered
creatures come from within our borders. Only one, the Cross River Gorilla, from Nigeria, comes
from Africa.
• "Swine" flu does not in fact come from pigs, but causes international panic and has spread from
Mexico to Europe in a few short weeks.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN SCENE
• The elections passed without major incidents as South Africans again walked the `high road`
scenario. The question on 34% of South African voters minds is will Jacob Zuma continue to lead
us on the `high road` or will he take us up the low road. Vote for Col Timbers - we will always
take you on the high road.
• SA Manufacturing output fell 15% year on year in February says Stats SA. This contrasts to the
T-Shirt industry which saw the ANC dish out around 2 million T-Shirts against the 300 that Col
Timbers gave out to its staff!
• Will Trevor Manuel be in or out as financial minister? If he goes, who will take his place? In
his 13 years at the head of Finance, local Kensington boy Manuel has become a legend in
international finance.
• Autumn finally comes to South Africa with the first Cape winter rains bringing the frogs into
song.
• Everybody is predicting a huge drop in the costs of internet connection and a bandwidth bonanza
as new submarine cables are planned for the African coast.

THE SPORTS SCENE
• SA beats Australia to secure the ODI Series on home soil.
• Bollywood Cricket Fever reaches our shores and we all taste the new colourful style of cricket.
• A lucky few get tickets in the World Cup Ticket Lottery.
• The UEAFA League reaches fever pitch for the die hard fans.

Corolla “ADRICK WP”.
• Theo Barthus is our new Despatch Supervisor and he brings a new elegance to the job with his
long energetic stride. Charlo Rensburg and Randal Lewis have also been promoted and we wish
them all the best for the future.

MONTHLY MOTIVATIONAL THOUGHT
If you said to us a year ago that the least of my problems would be Iraq – which is still a pretty serious problem – I don’t think anyone would have believed it.
Barack Obama
