PINE

Pine, from the botanical family Pinaceae, commonly known as pinus, is versatile and even-textured, although knotty.
The advantages of Pine include quality, value for money, availability, sustainability and workability.
COL TIMBERS procures most of its Pine from the winter rainfall regions of the Western and Southern Cape. Here, the slower growing trees produce superior timber to varieties grown in summer rainfall areas. We source only kiln-dried graded industrial or structural timber. Due to recent fires and the government’s exit strategy (which has the effect of reducing the amount of land under Pine plantation), South African sawmills are unable to produce sufficient rough sawn timber to keep up with local demand.Local timber manufacturers are therefore supplementing requirements by importing Pine from various countries overseas.
Pine is suitable for:
- Building and construction
- Flooring, ceilings and panelling
- Furniture
- Laminated posts and tops
- DIY projects
- Many other applications
Pine requires pressure treatment and protection for structural applications and exterior use. For full details, ask your merchant or DIY store.

MALAYSIAN MERANTI

Due to South Africa’s dry climate, there is no suitable local hardwood. We therefore source Meranti directly from Malaysia.
Meranti, from the botanical family Dipterocarpaceae, commonly known as shorea, has a medium texture and density. Extremely versatile and basically free of knots, Malaysian grading rules allow minimum pinholes and shot holes, neither of which are classified as defects. The colour varies from pale brown to medium red.
We only import kiln-dried Meranti. All our Meranti is stored under cover in controlled conditions.
Meranti is used extensively in the manufacture of:
- Joinery
- Mouldings
- Garden gates
- Garage doors
- Pergolas
- Various applications in the DIY market
As Meranti is a classified hardwood, it is not susceptible to local destroying agents and does not need to be pressure treated for exterior use.
