TREATED TIMBER

(A) Tank containing chemicals (in this case, CCA)

(B) Wood, neatly stacked for treatment

(C) Vacuum pressure treatment tank (a vacuum is drawn, the cylinder is then flooded with chemicals and the pressure raised until the timber refuses to absorb further preservative)

Why treat wood?
To give it extended service life

How is wood treated?
Preservative chemicals are added which are antagonistic to wood destroying agencies (beetles, fungi etc.)

What treatment is appropriate?
Depends on hazard classification (where timber used, what wood destroying agents it will be exposed to etc.)

Significant treatment types:
CCA – Copper Chrome Arsenic (heavy duty, light green) TBTO - Tributylin Oxide (light duty, colourless)
